Paris through the Eyes of a Lover

by on January 27, 2010

Le Pont des Arts is my favorite bridge in Paris.  It’s beautiful, not ornately so but esthetically so.  It’s also a pedestrian bridge allowing one to wander from side to side soaking in the sights.  When my son lived in the Marais he took me on long walks when his mom came to visit and we’d try to be on this bridge at midnight.  We’re both night owls.  He not so much anymore with two babies in the house and an energetic, early riser wife.

Today I’m here in broad daylight and I’m finding a “bridge event”.  Hanging from the protective grill from the handrail to the roadbed are hundreds of tiny little padlocks; most carry a written message.  In fact, some have been professionally inscribed.  “20 YR STRONG”, “Happy 10th Anniversary”, “Marilyn loves Dennis”, “Dennis loves Marilyn”.  Three tiny little pink heart shaped padlocks dangling in a chain say “Papa”, “Mama”, “Baby”.  I’ll have to get my own padlock to hang on my favorite bridge.  I’ll write on there, “Paris, je t’aime”.
